Creating Vibrant Communities

SuperValu are committed to building inclusive and thriving communities. We will continue to positively contribute to the communities we operate in locally ensuring they are more sustainable, inclusive and better places to live.

SuperValu TidyTowns

SuperValu TidyTowns is the longest-established, community-led sustainability initiative in Ireland. Organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the SuperValu TidyTowns Competition inspires almost 30,000 passionate volunteers across a record number 924 committees who give over 3 million hours of their time back to their community every year.

TidyTowns

2021 marked the 30th year of SuperValu sponsoring the competition. Working with our network of independent retailers across the country, the hard-working TidyTowns volunteers share the desire to build thriving, sustainable communities and to make villages and towns across the country better places to work and live in.

In recent years, SuperValu stores have partnered with their local TidyTowns committees to increasingly focus on sustainability initiatives such as biodiversity and conservation. Since January 2019 over 28,879 trees have been planted by TidyTowns committees around the country. Workshops on plastic reduction, packaging segregation, and recycling have been held all over the country and these have had a noticeable and positive impact on the local environment.  The SuperValu TidyTowns competition also recognises the value and importance of biodiversity. More than 200 SuperValu TidyTowns committees have engaged with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and made their local areas significantly pollinator friendly and 46% of all TidyTowns committees say that biodiversity is their main priority area.

SuperValu Save the Bees

Save The Bees Homepage

At SuperValu, we are huge supporters of Irish producers and suppliers. We support 1800 Irish suppliers, and we want to keep buying and supporting Irish and local, which is why we are so committed to protecting pollinators. We are delighted to work with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan to make change through our Save the Bees campaign. There are simple steps we can all take to make Ireland a habitable ecosystem for bees and our SuperValu Save The Bees packs will provide support awareness, education and action to 560,000 primary school children across 3240 schools across the country.

This initiative also gives children the fantastic opportunity to win a share of €50,000 for their primary school. Learn more about our Save the Bees campaign, click here. The Save the Bees competition is now closed.

GAA

Gaa launch

SuperValu and GAA bring together a true partnership of two of Ireland's most community focused organisations. We have been proud sponsors of the GAA All-Ireland Football Championship for over 11 years and we are proud to say that it is a partnership that continues to grow from strength to strength. Since our sponsorship began, we have invested over €30 million in supporting the GAA from grassroot level. Our local retailers also support the GAA at a grassroots level, funding and sponsoring local GAA clubs all over the country. Over 1,000 local GAA clubs are supported every year.

In 2021, together with the GAA, SuperValu announced our commitment to increase participation in GAA sports among people from diverse backgrounds by 30% by 2025. SuperValu’s ‘Bring It On’ campaign aims to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in the GAA, and ultimately, the power of diversity in community.

SuperValu announced in Summer 2021 that they will continue our sponsorship of the Cork Senior Ladies Football Team. Our sponsorship of the country’s most successful ladies’ team is now entering its 8th year and SuperValu are delighted to once again be backing the girls in red.

Autism

Autism Friendly Shopping

SuperValu continues to support the autism community and help create more inclusive communities across a range of initiatives including learning resources, awareness campaigns, community support seminars and autism friendly shopping in-stores. Together with AsIAm, SuperValu are on a journey to build more inclusive communities around Ireland.

SuperValu’s deep roots in towns and villages across Ireland allows us to build more inclusive communities. Our work with AsIAm has shown how we use our unique position in the heart of Irish communities to make positive changes. In 2021, over €50,000 was raised instore for AsIAm. Over 100 SuperValu stores now offer autism-friendly shopping times, with reduced lighting and less noise.  Our Autism Friendly Towns campaign, which shows that communities fully accessible for autistic people are stronger, more sustainable places to live, has grown significantly to include 12 towns.
