Iodine

Anyone with an under active thyroid has probably heard about the importance of iodine. Iodine is needed to help our bodies produce the hormone thyroxine. Thyroxine helps to control our metabolism and low levels of thyroxine can lead to weight gain, dry skin and raised cholesterol levels. Iodine also helps us to release energy from food and is needed for good brain function.

Where can I find Iodine?

You will find iodine in fish, shellfish and dairy foods like milk and yoghurt. Eggs are also a good source. Fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts are not good sources of iodine so it is important that you eat fish and dairy foods to make sure you get enough iodine.

Did you know?

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is the main cause of under active thyroid seen in Ireland. This is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the thyroid gland and reduces the amount of the thyroxine the body can make. Taking iodine has little, if any, effect in helping this type of under active thyroid. The treatment is a tablet from your doctor that helps to replace the thyroxine.
