As Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Champions since 2019, we recognise the important role we play in the climate crisis, in our own business, but also with our suppliers and our customers. We want to make it easier for our shoppers to make more sustainable choices as well as help people make informed choices that have sustainable impact with our 'Take local action, make global impact' initiative.

We work with Greenstreets, packaging compliance and recyclability specialists, in our work on sustainable packaging.

Sustainability Development Goal Champion

SuperValu is a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Champion, due to our ongoing commitment to sustainability, first being awarded the title in the 2019-2020 Programme.

Sustineo

SuperValu have worked with Irish sustainability consultancy, Sustineo to calculate the estimated emissions impacts for some local actions.

SuperValu TidyTowns

The national SuperValu TidyTowns competition is an annual contest organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development.

In 2023, SuperValu launched a new three-year partnership with GIY Ireland called SuperValu Let’s GROW

All Ireland Pollinator Plan

We were delighted to work with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan to make change through our Save the Bees campaign.

Guaranteed Irish

In partnership with Guaranteed Irish, SuperValu champions Irish food and drink producers. We are committed to remaining the largest supporter of the Irish food industry. As well as continuing to support over 1,800 Irish suppliers.

Food Academy

We work with Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Offices, to give start-up food and drink producers an opportunity to get their products on SuperValu shelves.

GAA

We are proud sponsors of the GAA All-Ireland Football Championship for 14 years and are proud to say that it is a partnership that continues to grow from strength to strength.

Cork Senior Ladies Football Team

SuperValu has sponsored the Cork Senior Ladies Football Team since 2013. Our sponsorship of the country’s most successful ladies’ team is now entering its 10th year.

National Biodiversity Center

We are currently funding a Project Officer position in the NBDC. This position is vital in the fight against the decline of our Irish bee population and helping to preserve Ireland’s biodiversity.

Together with AsIAm, SuperValu are on a journey to build more inclusive communities around Ireland.

Food Waste Charter

SuperValu, part of Musgrave Group, has re-signed the Food Waste Charter, led by the EPA, as part of our commitment to reducing food waste.

We’re working with the Carbon Trust on our journey towards achieving Net Zero, under Musgrave Group targets.

Research

People want to make a change, but don't know where to start.

Climate change and its impact on the environment and how individuals can make positive changes remains important for Irish consumers. According to research carried out by Amarach for SuperValu, 80% of people in Ireland would like to reduce their food waste. SuperValu’s research also shows that when people are unsure of how to recycle an item 74% dispose of it in the residual waste disposal bin (i.e. black bin) and only one in five people read the recycling labels on the packaging before binning their rubbish.

SuperValu have worked with Irish sustainability consultancy, Sustineo to calculate the estimated emissions impacts for some local actions. We have provided calculations for individual greenhouse gas emissions savings versus what might be achieved with collective action by SuperValu customers.
