Filligans

Filligans food story started in 1997 when Sara and Philip Moss began making jam, marmalade and chutney for a Dublin craft shop from their country kitchen in Glenties, west Donegal. The pure, natural beauty outside their door inspired the crafting of products reflecting their environment. Over a period of time demand for the homemade products grew and with support from local agencies, Filligans began employing more local people and expanding the range of products.

Filligans has always believed in creating products in small batches and using traditional farmhouse methods using the very best of natural ingredients. This open pot, slow cooking method enhances the flavour, texture and taste in every jar. Recipes for each product have either been passed down from generation to generation or created through the process of research, experimentation and taste-testing. Products are free from artificial additives, colourings and preservatives and suitable for vegetarians, with most of the wide-range suitable for vegans too.

The company’s ethos of small batches and traditional methods has remained a core part of the business and each product continues to be handmade in Glenties under the watchful eye of director, Willie Cremen. The Filligans’ team has over 100 years of combined food experience, and pride themselves on crafting products that are made, labelled and packaged in Donegal. The ten strong Filligans’ team have come together over the 24 years and their knowledge, skill and craft is central to consistently producing “the tastes of the good old times” as well as products for modern, contemporary tastes.

Supporting sustainability is also a core part of Filligan’s strategy and in 2020, Filligans received Origin Green status which brings sustainability to the centre of the company’s operations including its relationship with staff, suppliers, customers and the wider community. Filligans also uses 100% recyclable cardboard for its packaging and its glass jars can be recycled widely. The Irish company also supports the wider community and sponsors the local GAA club. Members of the Filligans team engage in many local charity and community activities.

The local producer is also no stranger to the hall of fame and has picked up various product and company awards and accolades through the decades including numerous Great Taste and Blas na hEireann awards and the Georgina Campbell National Breakfast Preserve Award in 2020. The company was awarded the best ‘Food Coast’ category in the Donegal Local Enterprise Awards in 2019.

It is a natural progression for Filligans to work with Supervalu, a nationally recognised supporter of local producers. Providing a structured programme where Filligans can retain its identity while having extensive access to local customers is very attractive. The benefit to the company in reaching out to local customers and meeting their need for ease of purchase is fundamental to the development of Filligans’ relationship with the customer.
